There have been a number of factors that have contributed to the boom in the hospitality sector over the last decade in this country. The explosive growth of Indian youth population in the country, along with enhancement of disposable income among them and rapid urbanization have altered and encouraged thoughts among the masses as far as travelling is concerned. The above aspects have allowed the propagation of the hotel and catering industry in the country. Continuous and constant growth of the hotel sector and steady diversification has presented ample opportunities for the hotel management graduates in the country.Hotel management institutes have been flourishing across the country in order to meet the demands of skilled labour in the hospitality sector. In Kolkata too, there have been several institutes that have emerged over the years in a big way and have produced alumni who have gone on to create a name for themselves in hotel and catering sector.
Hotel management studies are pursued by a student when he/she completes 10+2. Some of the prominent institutes in Kolkata offering hotel management education are Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management and IAM Institute of Hotel Management. Among these the first two institutions attract maximum student footfalls mainly due the learning infrastructure they offer. IIHM was started in 2004 and offer courses approved by UGC and the State government. Most of the above mentioned institutes offer courses like Bachelor and Master Degree in Hotel Management, Diploma in Hotel Management and Diploma in Hotel Operation.
Coming back to the issue of learning infrastructure, there are two major elements involved in these viz. the faculty competency and non-human facilitators of learning. Hotel management education is something which cannot be offered within the confines of a classroom and it needs a simulating environment where students get to know how they will be coping with situations when they are out there in the industry as professionals. Thus what is found is that most institutes offer not just spacious and well equipped classrooms but also facilities like food production labs, food & beverage service labs, house keeping labs, front office labs and so on. Reason for that is quite simple. These are the major departments of a hotel business and students need to have hands on experience about these departments. They need to apply knowledge learnt in classrooms for being thoroughly skilled.
Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition is under the aegis of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and is one of the oldest institutes in the city set up in 1963. Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management is one of the educational offerings of the JIS Group and offers hotel management courses approved by AICTE.Hotel sector is booming and so is the hotel education sector since the institutes are on the right track in imparting quality and meaningful education to wannabe professionals of the hospitality business.
