Tiago, Tata Motor’s latest offering, is a product which is global in its features and promises. Initially called ‘Zica’, the name was changed to Tiago since the name was similar to the ‘Zika’ virus. Tiago matches the quality and design of the global hatchbacks and holds its own quite well. Its compact size and shape gives it a very ‘zippy’ feel and as it sits comfortably between the big Bolt and the cheaper Nano, Tata Tiago bridges the gap in the line-up. Though Indica has been in that space for years, it is mostly preferred by fleet operators rather than private owners. Tiago targets the latter and aspires to be in contention whenever people think of a small car.
The overall design of the car is modern and contemporary and is well aimed at a younger audience. The design of the car is smart, fresh and based on a new platform. The oversized grille, swept back headlamps and the prominent creases along the length of the car gives it a very unique look. The interior is cheerfully designed using nice colors and fabric trims. The cabin has ample amount of leg room and three can be easily seated on the rear passenger seat. The dashboard is elaborate with good quality buttons and switches adorning it and the steering wheel has a sporty feel to it. Tiago also boasts of several other connectivity features which includes a Juke app that will allow you to pair one phone to the car and then other phones through it.
The Tiago has new engines powering it. The 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines use a DOHC 4-valve per cylinder. The Petrol one has a max power of 85PS with a maximum torque of 114Nm while the diesel produces max power of 70 PS with a maximum torque of 140Nm. Running on compression ratios and oversquare bore stroke configurations, both engines focus on enhancing efficiency and improving driveability.
Unlike the previous generation turbocharged mill, the Revotron petrol engine is naturally aspirated displacing 1199cc and is all aluminum. The multi drive mode includes just two modes instead of three like in the Zest or the Bolt. The 1047cc turbocharged diesel engine has exceptional operating efficiencies and is quieter due to the balancer shaft which ekes out the vibration and the sound-deadening steel used in making the oil sump. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual. The Tiago also comes with ABS and the top end variant will have airbags on even the passenger side.
In spite of a few flaws, the car is comfortable to drive and has large bolstered seats and a powerful air conditioner. The Tata Tiago is very different from whatever they have manufactured till now. It is a compelling purchase in the segment and will pose to be a good competition for its rivals. If you are in the market for a fun car on a budget, the Tiago is definitely a great option to consider.
